Synopsis of the seminar

The deterioration of concrete and its repair & protection according to EN1504

Concrete does not seem to have any weak points in terms of durability. However, it is only partially true. For example, steel rods are used to reinforce the tensile properties of the concrete but at the same time it also introduces other problems to its durability. The conditions in which concrete is mixed and applied are also important to its performance. In order to produce durable concrete, it is always good that we take a deeper look into the causes of concrete deterioration.

In recent years, the ever increasing need of maintenance and repair interventions on structures has demanded a proper guideline on the workmanship and the repair materials selection. The introduction of European Standards EN 1504 “Products and Systems for Concrete Repair and Protection”, is considered a milestone in the rehabilitation industry. The standard defines the procedures and characteristics of products used to repair, maintain and protect concrete structures, in order to provide a valid instrument for owners, consultants and contractors to select suitable material to repair their structures.

Waterproof Solution to Building Structure

Waterproofing is a very important and broad subject. Bad waterproofing not only affects a structure’s serviceability – a leaking roof being the obvious example – but also its durability, with water penetration being a major contributor to concrete deterioration. There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for waterproofing. Structures are exposed to different stresses depending on exposure conditions. For example, an open roof slab is not subjected to hydrostatic pressure but suffers the effects of sudden temperature changes and wet/dry conditions. On the other hand, a deep basement structure may be in aggressive soil conditions and is likely subject to hydrostatic pressure.

The speaker will attempt to make sense of this complex subject by looking at common waterproofing problems, the different parts of building structures requiring waterproofing and the important criteria governing selection of the right solution. For example, how important is a waterproofing membrane’s elongation value for the application you are considering? The presentation will also cover best practices for successful waterproofing – for example, the importance of surface preparation and detailing - and some practical case studies.
