Monday 13 January 2020, 9:30am - 12:30pm

Venue: Hotel Armada Petaling Jaya
Lot 6, Lorong Utara 6, Section 52
46200 Petaling Jaya

Outline Of Talk

The Influence of Relict Discontinuities on Cut Slope Instability

Ir. Dr. Toh Cheng Teik will speak on the importance of understanding site geology and how relict geological structures have a significant effect on the mechanism of cut slope failure. Stability analysis is premised on the choice of the correct failure mechanism. An assumption of an incorrect mechanism results in incorrect assessment of Factors of Safety. Difficulties in comprehensively identifying relict discontinuities can result in spurious assessment of slope stability.

Case histories will be used to illustrate different slope failure mechanisms and to show the effects these mechanisms have on the computed Factor of Safety as well as on hazard potential. For instance, the magnitude of instability and the travel distance of landslide debris is much affected by the mechanism of instability that causes a landslide.
