Venue: MATRADE Exhibition & Convention Centre

TStructures suffering from distress are akin to patients requiring medical attention. Many engineers whose training did not emphasise on the basic understanding of concrete as a structural material often find themselves faced with challenges related to analysing symptoms and diagnosing causes of defects related to faults and failures in RC structures. The challenges faced by practicing engineers today are linked to the lack of understanding of the root cause of the various deterioration mechanisms. Basic knowledge of the specific causes of these problems is vital. Furthermore, in the field of forensic engineering, the skills and technology related to the appraisal of structures are very different from those acquired from the construction of new structures.

It is the aim of this technical seminar to provide an overview of the common types of deterioration mechanisms prevalent in our built environment. In this seminar, different mechanisms responsible for the deterioration of concrete in RC structures shall be illustrated to highlight the importance of identifying and diagnosing causes of defects, faults and failures in existing structures.

This seminar further highlights a pathological approach in determining the root cause of defects associated with concrete deterioration before undertaking repairs. State-of-the-art testing techniques commonly employed in the testing and appraisal of concrete shall be highlighted in this presentation. Selection of both materials and techniques is equally important in ensuring that remediation works are successfully carried out during the rehabilitation stage. Today, with the advent of technology, new generation remedial systems are available to complement traditional repair materials and techniques, thus allowing the engineer to optimise and value-add innovative repair propositions during the design stage.
