Code of Practice on Energy Efficiency and Use of Renewable Energy for Non-Residential Buildings

VENUE: Eastin Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

Synopsis of Presentation

Climate change coupled with depleting fossil fuels not to mention their price volatility requires us to face up to the challenge of the ever increasing awareness and need for sustainability and energy efficient designs. Engineers must keep abreast and know more about the implications and duties imposed on them under the MS 1525:2007 Code of Practice. This seminar serves to inform Engineers about the MS 1525:2007, and highlight the role of the Engineers in incorporating the active and passive design features in order to comply with MS 1525 as this Code should be the minimum baseline used in designs. MS 1525:2007 is the Code of Practice for designing energy efficient buildings and include the application of renewable energy in new and existing non-residential buildings as it:

  1. encourages the design, construction, operation and maintenance of new and existing buildings to reduce the use of energy without constraining creativity, building function and the comfort or productivity of the occupants; and yet dealing with cost considerations.
  2. provides the criteria and minimum standards for energy efficiency in the design of new buildings, retrofit of existing buildings and methods for determining compliance with these standards;
  3. provides guidance for energy efficiency designs that demonstrates good professional judgement to comply with minimum standards; and
  4. encourages the application of renewable energy in new and existing buildings. MS 1525:2007 is already incorporated in the Green Building Index Malaysia (GBI Malaysia).
